MongoDB Skill Badges: A Flexible Way to Teach Modern Database Fundamentals

For educators teaching databases, info systems, web development, computer science and more, MongoDB Skill Badges offer a simple way to bring NoSQL and document-database concepts into your curriculum — without reworking your entire syllabus.

MongoDB Skills are 60- to 90-minute learning experiences covering everything from the document model and schema design to more advanced topics like generative AI and security. Students gain hands-on experience with CRUD operations, aggregation pipelines, indexing, and schema design — skills directly relevant to what they’ll use on the job.

Two Ways to Teach It, Your Choice

The core flexibility of the program comes down to one decision: lecture it, or assign it.

  • Lecture in class using MongoDB’s pre-built slides, and walk students through a topic in a single class period.
  • Assign it as self-paced eLearning, and let students work through the module independently on their own time.

Either way, the content is the same — you’re just choosing the delivery method that fits your course structure that week. Many educators mix both approaches across a semester: lecturing on foundational topics, then assigning more advanced ones as homework.

Skill Guides: A Built-In Study Resource

Every topic also comes with a Skill Guide — a one-page study reference students can use to review material before a Skill Check, or as a quick-reference alongside your lecture. It’s a lightweight resource that reinforces whichever delivery method you choose, without any extra prep work on your end.

Credentialing Without Extra Grading

Whether a topic was lectured or self-paced, students can validate what they learned with a 10-question Skill Check (passing score: 8/10, retakes allowed). Passing earns them an official Credly badge — shareable on LinkedIn — giving them a credential that means something to future employers, with no grading required from you.

Curriculum QuickStart Guides

To help you get started, we’ve created three QuickStart Guides:

Each guide walks you through the recommended track for that topic area, so you can plan your lectures or self-paced assignments in one place.

Getting Started

Join the MongoDB for Educators program to unlock $500 in Atlas credits, a free certification voucher, and access to all lecture slides, Skill Guides, and self-paced modules. Students create a free MongoDB Account with their .edu email to access self-paced content. Questions go to academia@mongodb.com.
