Recap: NITIC’s Inaugural Working Connections Symposium

On May 1, 2026, the National IT Innovation Center (NITIC) hosted its inaugural Working Connections Symposium, bringing together educators and administrators from across the country for a dynamic day of collaboration and shared learning.

Designed as a “show and tell” experience, the virtual symposium highlighted how faculty have transformed their classrooms after participating in Working Connections workshops. Attendees explored real-world applications, practical strategies, and forward-thinking approaches that are shaping the future of IT education.

Strong Engagement Across the Community

The inaugural event demonstrated strong national interest and engagement:

  • 115 total registrations
  • 64 participating organizations
  • 73 attendees joined the opening session
  • 80 participants engaged in Breakout Session 1
  • 54 participants attended Breakout Session 2
  • 59 participants attended Breakout Session 3

Each breakout session offered three presentation options, giving attendees a wide variety of topics to learn about. These numbers reflect both the breadth of the NITIC network and the growing demand for collaborative spaces focused on advancing IT education.

A Focus on Real-World Impact

The symposium centered on one key idea: moving from learning to implementation. Sessions showcased how faculty are actively integrating emerging technologies into their curricula.

Highlights included:

  • Embedding AI concepts directly into existing coursework rather than adding standalone classes
  • Redesigning traditional courses like PreCalculus to include Python and applied problem-solving
  • Integrating cloud tools such as AWS Bedrock and SageMaker into classroom labs
  • Building AI, machine learning, and data science pathways aligned with workforce demand
  • Leveraging industry partnerships to co-develop programs and strengthen career pipelines

The keynote session explored how the convergence of AI, cybersecurity, and infrastructure is reshaping technical education and redefining workforce expectations, particularly in regions experiencing rapid investment in data centers, cloud, and AI-driven systems.

Looking Ahead

With strong participation and meaningful engagement across sessions, the symposium laid a solid foundation for future events that continue to connect educators, amplify innovation, and advance technician education nationwide.

We extend our thanks to all presenters, attendees, and partners who made this first symposium a success, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the years ahead.
