Pasadena City College,
“AI-Enhanced Curriculum: Transforming Calculus and Statistics Education,” California Learning Lab.
This project aims to transform the teaching and learning of Calculus 1 at Pasadena City College by integrating AI tools like MathGPT.ai and ChatGPT to enhance student engagement, deepen conceptual understanding, and foster higher-order thinking. Over the next 12–18 months, we will develop AI-integrated curriculum modules that emphasize inquiry-based learning, problem-solving, and mathematical modeling with Python. Faculty collaboration will be central to this effort, facilitated through a Community of Practice where instructors will engage in discussions, provide input on AI’s role in calculus education, and refine course materials. As part of this initiative, we will host a speaker series featuring experts in AI and education, along with workshops that explore AI-powered teaching strategies, ethical considerations, and best practices.
“Transform Mathematics and Statistics education with AI-Enhanced Modeling and Computational Thinking Lab Course.” J. W. and Ida Jameson Foundation
1. Enhance Faculty Expertise – Provide ongoing professional development for mathematics and statistics faculty to integrate AI tools, computational modeling, and best practices into their teaching.
2. Develop AI-Infused Curriculum – Expand and refine PCC’s AI-enhanced calculus, linear algebra, and statistics courses, incorporating hands-on programming and real-world applications.
3. Host AI-Focused Events – Organize workshops, speaker series, and training sessions featuring AI and industry experts to bridge the gap between academia and professional practice.
4. Support a Certificate Program in Mathematics and Statistics for AI & Machine Learning – explore a structured pathway for students to gain specialized skills, enhancing their internships, employment, and advanced academic studies opportunities.
Note: I left the administrator info generic because we haven’t started with an administrator on our end yet. Xiaodan Leng and I (Jason Betrue) were hoping to start the process and do information gathering before bringing it to a dean at the school, but if an administrator needs to be involved before we can begin, please just let us know.
